Although Joseph Campbell coined the term “monomyth” to refer to the journey of every person in myth, Christopher Vogler reduced it to a 12 step hero’s journey for stories. This blog showcases the hero’s journey in popular film.

  • The hero begins in their everyday life. Here life is shown as it is, which will be in sharp contrast to the new world of adventure.

  • The Hero is called to an adventure, willingly or unwillingly. It can be an unwelcome herald or an expectant change.

  • Hero refuses the call because they are scared/busy/committed elswhere. Sometimes hero wants to accept but hero’s friends beg them to refuse.

  • Hero meets with a (human or nonhuman) mentor who provides guidance.

  • Hero commits to the journey and crosses a threshold into no man’s land.

  • Hero makes friends and enemies and is tried and tested.

  • Hero approaches the inmost cave which involves planning an attack or entering a mini-special world.

  • Hero faces the ultimate challenge and experiences a whiff of death.

  • Hero is rewarded with a treasure which can be tangible or intangible.

  • Hero sets on the road back home during which he experiences setbacks.

  • Hero is challenged again and is reborn into his true self.

  • Hero is rewarded.
